Default Have I just seen a Red Kite in North Somerset

I am used to seeing these birds when I visit my sister-in-law's in Berkshire, but I had not realised they had spread this far west.

However, sitting in the garden this afternoon, I found myself watching a bird of prey which was not the usual buzzard. The bird was quite high, and was red-brown in colour, but rather than get closer it drifted further away as I watched and vanished towards the south.

Have Red Kites been seen in this part of Somerset, or am I just fantasising?

I wonder of yours are from the Chiltern release moving west or Welsh birds moving east?

Certainly I see more birds west of Oxford every year

There have been quite a few sightings in Kent and Surrey too, although I am yet to be that lucky.

Every year the core range of the Chiltern birds seems to have spread a little more so just be patient Hevva.

Saying that I still haven't seen any in east Herts or Essex so Kent does surprise me a little. What I have noticed is an increase in buzzards as well and have started seeing them in Essex as well as Herts and Bucks. On the other hand kestrels no longer seem to be a common roadside bird.

Sitting in a jam on the M25 junction 7 was made quite enjoyable watching three buzzards soaring very low. Lots around mid-Kent too and, like you, the kestrel has sadly become a rare sight.

I've seen red kites every time I've been to that area of the country (South-west...I've only been two or three times, mind you) Maybe just a coincidence but I've always associated that part of the UK with red kites.

I saw two red kites just yesterday, but more where you would expect. I was on a coach on the M40 from London to Oxford. I know they are now a common sight in the Chilterns, but coming from NW London, it was a huge thrill for me.
